A RARE 16-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 4790,
29in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrel, short sight flat with acanthus scroll detailing, the barrel engraved 'JAMES WOODWARD & SONS. 64 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. S.W.', 2 1/2in. chamber, bored approx. true cyl. choke, some internal pitting, finely carved and arcaded fence, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, right hand sidelock with gold-inlaid cocking-indicator, border and fine acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14in. well-figured stock including 1 7/8in. wooden extension, snap fore-end (minor chips to woodwork) with horn finial, weight 5lb. 3oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was made as a '16 bore Woodward single barrel hammerless gun completed in August 1894 for Hon. C. Baring, 29" barrel.'
